I went up to Byron Bay recently and felt that it was a place that Ash might feel comfortable in. It's very young and alternative. The Nimbin communes are nearby.

I was also in Katoomba recently. You can get there with very little cash. All he would have had to do was buy a train ticket for a few dollars. They have a Buddhist monastery on Lurline St, where the monks live. They all have given up their worldly possessions, shaved their heads, wear their Tibetan monastic robes, in commitment to living a simple and pure life.
